I would informally assess my students' prior knowledge by asking guiding questions on the subject. For example, "What do you know about the Middle Ages?" "What time frame does the Middle Ages cover?" "Do you know any important individuals associated with that period?" "Is there anything else you can tell the class about the Middle Ages?"
